The Mid-Autumn Festival: A Night of Mooncakes and Family Fun!
Yay, it's the Mid-Autumn Festival! This is one of my favorite holidays because it means I get to stay up late, eat delicious mooncakes, and spend quality time with my family. Let me tell you all about the fun we had this year!
A few days before the festival, my mom took my brother and me to the Asian market to pick out our mooncakes. There were so many pretty boxes to choose from with different designs and flavors. We got a box of lotus seed paste mooncakes which are the classic kind. But we also picked out some fun flavors like chocolate, mango, and green tea! I can't wait to try them all.
On the night of the festival, we helped my mom set the table with fancy dishes and chopsticks. We put out the mooncakes and fresh fruit for our traditional snacks. As the sun started to go down, we headed outside with pillows and blankets to set up our moon-viewing spot in the backyard.
My dad told me and my brother the story behind the Mid-Autumn Festival. A long time ago in ancient China, there were 10 suns in the sky that took turns coming out each day. But one year, all 10 suns came out at the same time and started to burn and scorch the Earth! An awesome archer named Hou Yi shot down 9 of the suns to save the planet. The last sun became the moon we see today.
Hou Yi's wife Chang'e drank a potion that allowed her to fly up and live on the moon. But she got lonely up there all by herself. So once a year during the autumn full moon, the Chinese people would celebrate Chang'e and the bright, beautiful moon by eating mooncakes and enjoying being with their loved ones. Pretty cool story, huh?
After the story, my mom cut open the first box of mooncakes and they smelled sooo goo
d. I took a big bite of the lotus seed paste one - it was sweet and the texture was soft, but a little dense. The egg yolk in the center was my favorite part! I also tried a chocolate mooncake which was like a really rich brownie. Yum!
My little sister made a wish by holding her mooncake up to the shining full moon before taking a bite. I think she wished for a trampoline for our backyard - I hope it comes true! We all drank hot tea and fresh fruit juices with our mooncakes. Everything tasted awesome together.
While we ate our snacks, we looked up at the big, bright moon in the night sky. It was so pretty and round! My dad pointed out the crater patterns on the moon's surface that make it look like there's a rabbit or a lady on the moon, depending on how you look at it.
We played fun games outside like charades and hot potato while we waited for the moon to get higher in the sky. When it was directly overhead, we all went inside to open the rest of our red envelope gifts from our aunt and uncle. I got some new action figures and Pokemon cards - so cool!
After presents, we had more mooncakes for dessert while watching TV and letting our food settle. My mom put on the Mulan movie since it has some parts about the Mid-Autumn Festival. I look forward to watching it every year!
Even though I really wanted to stay up all night, my parents made me and my siblings go to bed around 11pm. As I fell asleep, I could see the bright full moon shining through my bedroom window. I dreamed of tasting moon cheese and jumping around in a spacesuit on the moon's rocky surface! Hopefully next year my family and I can continue our Mid-Autumn Festival traditions and make more fun memories together. Good night, moon!

The Mid-Autumn Festival is My Favorite Holiday!
The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of my favorite holidays of the whole year! It's when we get to eat delicious mooncakes and go outside at night to admire the beautiful full moon. Last year's Mid-Autumn Festival was extra special because I got to spend it with my whole family.
A few days before the festival, my mom took my little brother and me to the bakery to pick out our mooncakes. There were so many different kinds! They had lotus seed paste mooncakes, red bean paste mooncakes, and even mooncakes stuffed with egg yolks. My favorite are the ones with sweet black sesame paste in the middle.
My brother wanted the mooncakes with colorful designs imprinted on top. He liked the ones decorated to look like little bunnies or bears. Mom let us each pick out the mooncakes we wanted and then she also got a big fancy box with assorted mooncakes to share with the rest of the family.
When we got home, my dad had already hung the lanterns up outside. He put them all along the little garden path that leads to our backyard patio. That night for dinner, we had all my favorite foods - my mom's dumplings, sweet and sour chicken, and sauteed vegetables. For dessert, we finally got to sample the mooncakes we had picked out. My black sesame one was so yummy and nutty tasting!
