The space age began in 1957 when the Soviet Union launched (发射) Sputnik l.
It was the world's first manmade satellite(卫星). In 1957, the Soviet Union also launched Sputnik 2 with a dog named Laika. Laika was the first animal to orbit(沿轨道运动) the earth. In 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first to fly a spacecraft when the Soviet Union launched h
im aboard Vostok. Later that year, Alan Shepard became the first American to fly a spacecraft. John Glenn followed him. John Glenn orbited the earth three times in 1962. In 1963, the United States and the Soviet Union started a competition to see who could put a man on the moon first. In 1969, the United States won when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon. The United States and the Soviet Union have also put space stations into orbit around the earth. Space travellers use these space stations as both a home and a lab. The United States made and sent the first reusable(可以再度使用的) manned spacecraft, the Space Shuttle, in 1981. Since then, five different shuttles went into space over one hundred times.
