hen Ms Linda Chiu started conducting Chi-nese language classes for children 11 years
ago, she had four students in her class. Now,
enrolment at her two Chinese language centers in Ja-karta is reaching 1,000.
From independent language centers to national schools to universities, Indonesians are flocking to learn a language once banned by the Suharto regime, which ended in 1998, public displays of Chinese culture and language were banned. The options to learn Mandarin then were limited.
Anthropologist Johanes Herlijanto says that interest in learning Mandarin began to increase in the 1990s as China's economy grew. Now, Mandarin is taught at a growing number of primary and secondary schools, uni-versities and private language centers. In Jakarta alone, about 100 or so language centers offer Mandarin lessons, while more national and private universities are offering Chinese Studies programmes.
At Ms Chiu's Children Learning Chinese centers, children ranging from tots to teenagers attend classes twice or three times a week. “I always tell the kids how useful and important it is to learn the language. Each time I go away on holiday, even to countries like Aus-tralia, I hear Mandarin spoken in different places,”Ms Chiu said. “That just gives you an idea of how far it has spread.”                        (The Straits Times , May 28, 2011)

ithin a decade, all Swedish primary schools should offer Chinese lessons, said Sweden's education min-ister Jan Bjoerklund, insisting the move was needed
to improve competitiveness.
"I want to see Sweden become the first country in Europe to introduce instruction in Chinese as a foreign language at all primary and secondary schools," said Jan Bjoerklund.
"Not everyone in the business world speaks English. Very highly qualified activities are leaving Europe to move to China. Chinese will be much more important from an economic point of view than French or Spanish," he said. English is today the main foreign language taught in Swedish schools, followed by Spanish, German and French.
Bjoerklund acknowledged that such a move would demand a lot of resources, especially for recruiting educators who can teach Chinese, but said that within a decade all primary schools should be equipped to teach the language, while it might take 15 years for secondary schools to readjust.
