Making Mooncakes for the Mid-Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of my favorite traditional festivals in China. It is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month each year. On this day, people gather togethe
r to admire the bright moon, eat delicious mooncakes, and participate in various traditional activities.
What excites me the most is being involved in the process of making mooncakes. On this special day, my family and I prepare the ingredients and tools for making mooncakes together. First, we gather flour, sugar, oil, and other necessary ingredients. We also prepare different types of fillings, such as red bean paste, lotus seed paste, and walnut.
Next, we mix the flour, sugar, and oil together, and add an appropriate amount of water to form a soft dough. Then, we divide the dough into small pieces and roll them into round and thin pancakes using our palms.
On each pancake, we place a suitable amount of filling. Depending on personal preferences, we can choose red bean paste, lotus seed paste, or walnut as the filling. My favorite is the red bean paste filling because it is sweet but not too heavy, and has a rich texture.
After placing the filling on the pancake, we wrap it up and gently close the edges with our fingers. This requires some skills and patience. Once they are all wrapped up, we can put the mooncakes into the oven for baking.
The baking time and temperature depend on personal preferences and the type of mooncakes. Some mooncakes with a soft texture require low and slow baking, while others with a crispy texture require high and fast baking. When the mooncakes turn golden and emit an enticing aroma, it means they are ready.
While waiting for the mooncakes to bake, we also enjoy listening to the stories of the Mid-Autumn Festival, and taste other traditional foods such as pomelos and peanuts with our family and friends. The atmosphere of togetherness makes me feel warm and happy.
After the mooncakes are baked, we take them out of the oven and let them cool before packaging them into exquisite gift boxes. Sometimes, we even carve special patterns, such as rabbits or the moon, on the mooncakes to enhance the festive atmosphere.
Finally, we give these homemade mooncakes as gifts to our relatives and friends to express our blessings and gratitude. At the same time, we also receive mooncakes from others, which is a traditional way of exchanging gifts during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Every year during the Mid-Autumn Festival, I enthusiastically participate in the process of making mooncakes. Through making mooncakes, I have gained a better understanding of the traditions and culture of this festival. At the same time, I enjoy the precious moments spent with my family.
