Ariana caught another whiff(难闻的味道)and tried to hold her breath. She moved away slightly, but Ashley only moved closer and continued talking. Ariana felt trapped. She wanted badly to tell Ashley that she didn’t smell very good. But how could she do that without hurting Ashley’s feelings? Instead, she gathered the remains of her lunch to throw in the trash, thankful for the excuse to get some fresh air. She looked back to see Ashley eating quietly. Ashley’s hair was tangled(乱糟糟的), and her clothes were dirty. Ariana forced herself to go back to the table and take her seat, vowing(发誓)that she would not sit with Ashley tomorrow.
When Ariana got home from school, she complained to her mother, “There’s a girl named Ashley who likes to sit next to me in school, but she smells bad.”
“She’s probably having a tough day,” said her mother.
“No, it’s not just one day.She smells bad a lot,” Ariana explained. “Nobody else likes to sit next to her, eit
her.”
“I don’t think you understand Ashley’s situation, so let me ask you this…’ Her mother’s tone was serious. “Who makes sure that your hair is combed every morning so you’ll look nice when you go to school?”
“You do,” answered Ariana.
“Who makes sure you’re bathed and cleaned every day? And your clothes are washed and neatly ironed?”
“You and Daddy,” Ariana said again.
“Do you live in a nice home? Do you have enough to eat?”
Ariana nodded, beginning to feel guilty. She was starting to understand now. Ashley couldn’t help her situation because she was only seven years ol d—the same age as Ariana. Grown-ups are supposed to take care of kids.
“Why doesn’t her family take better care of her?” Ariana asked.
“Not all children live in the best situation,” her mother said. “The best thing you can do for Ashley is to treat her with kindness and sympathy.”

She was always careful not to hurt Ashley’s feelings.
Para2:
At the end of the school year, the second grade prepared to go on a field trip to the zoo. The day befor

Ashley was absent, and Ariana worried that her friend would not have lunch because Ashley always ate the school lunch. Therefore, the next day, Ariana asked her mom to make an extra lunch for Ashley—just in case. When Ariana got to school, she discovered that she had been right. Ashley had not brought any lunch for the field trip. When Ariana gave the lunch to Ashley, she saw tears well up Ashley’s eyes.

Carl lost his job. He tried to find another one but it wasn’t easy. As a result, the poor fel low couldn’t pay his bills and he couldn’t even find anybody to lend him any.
Carl spent most of his days at home. Sometimes he looked out of the window and watched his neighbor’s house. An old professor lived there alone. Strangely, he hardly talked to his neighbors. Carl could see into the professor’s house because he never drew the curtain. The rooms
were full of antique (古董) furniture and vases. Carl thought, “If I got an antique vase, I could sell it for
a lot of money.”
Every day Carl saw the professor. He left at 10 o’clock in the morning and came back home at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. He had a dog. Carl often went to the fence and played with it or gave it a piece of meat.
One day Carl thought, “I will go into the professor’s house and steal a vase. I will break the window and climb in. The dog is not a problem.”
There was an old gun in the cellar(地下室). It had been his great grandfather’s favorite thing a long time before. Carl didn’t want to use the gun but he thought, “Anything could happen.”
He wanted to hide the gun under his coat but it was too long so he had to cut the end off with a saw(锯).
The next morning he watched the professor leaving home at 10 o’clock. Carl climbed over the fence. The dog ran to him and Carl gave it a big bone. He threw a piece of stone through the window, which broke. It wasn’t high. He could climb into the house easily.
He looked around inside. There were paintings on the walls, small figures and vases on the shelves an
d the floor. Carl didn’t know much about arts. He couldn’t choose. He reached his hands towards a big vase when he heard a noise. The front door opened and someone entered the house.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning. Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad we
备战高考nt with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.
Paragraph1:
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse.
Paragraph2:
We had no idea where we were and it got dark.
Paragraph1:
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. It was furry with a coat of gorgeous( 华丽的、极好的) brown hair. After looking up at me with its pair of red bulbs , it began to scurry(窜逃)ahead. “ Why not catch it and bring it back to Uncle Paul? They must be very happy.” With this thought, I rode h
ard to hunt for it. Dad saw it and had to follow me. The rabbit was very agile, soon entering a mountain forest . We had to get down the horses, continuing the chase and totally forgetting the track back. Even though we tried desperately, t he rabbit was out of sight in the end. Then we realized we were in the deep part of an forest.
Paragraph2:
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. And dark clouds seemed to be gathering in the sky.Taking out the cell phone, we soon found something was wrong: no signal. And no compass. Frightened, I stared at Dad , trying to seek a solution for the trouble from him. “Maybe what you have learned in geography class works," he said, pointing to the stars in the sky. I knew he meant the North Star. Soon we found the right direction. We hurried back finding the horses . And the river was in sight again. The family was worried and about to call the police. At the sight of us, they were relieved and hugged us tightly. There was nothing more memorable than this rabbit hunting in my life!
