“I just want a normal birthday party,” April told Bailey as they walked home from school.
Bailey knew what April meant. April’s parents loved the environment. And because April happened to be born on Earth Day, all her parties had an Earth Day theme.
“Remember when you turned seven?” said Bailey.
“How could I forget the Throw-Out Blowout?” said April.
“We helped out at your garage sales and donated the money to charity. And when you ”
“It was a Tree Spree,” finished April. “We planted maples.” “Last year, we all collected newspapers to recycle,” said Bailey. “The Print Sprint.” April groaned.
Bailey giggled. “I thought it was fun.”
Later that night, as April loaded the dishwasher, sh e said, “I’d like to plan my own party this year.”
“Sure,” said Mom. “We could have a Composts Carnival.” “Great idea!” said Dad.
April cleared her throat. “I’d like to go to Maze Craze instead.” “Really?” said Dad, surprised.
“I guess we could do that. Dad and I can send you kids there.” said Mom.
April couldn’t wait for her birthday! She and her friends would have so much fun. And they wouldn’t have to think one bit about the earth.
At school the next day, April told her friends. “I’m having my birthday party at Maze Craze!”
“You are?” said Josie. “But we always do something earthy on your birthday.” “Remember that salamander we found two years ago?” said Tyler. “Yeah,” said April. “This year, we’re not even going outside.”
“Oh!” said Tyler.
The following weekend, everyone gathered in the parking lot outside of Maze Craze. “Thanks for coming,” said April. “I’ve been so excited about my party. No shovels.
No collecting recyclables. Nothing earthy about it.” She shifted her feet. “Then I got here this
morning and saw this parking lot.”
April’s friends glanced around. Plastic bottles bounced across the ground. Newspapers and fast-food sacks blocked the storm drain. Shopping bags rustled in the trees.

If you ask me whether you should say yes to walk your neighbor’s dog, my answer would be a definite “Yes”,as long you do one thing I didn’t do when I helped out with my neighbor’s dog.
Here’s what I meant. You don’t need to ask your neighbor lots of questions about that particular dog, but just be patient to ask one very important question. Here is why.
Mrs. Gonzales and her adorable dog Rascal, live at the end of my street. My friend Ollie and I have played with Rascal since he was a puppy, so when Mrs. Gonzales asked if we’d like to take him to the park once in a while, we can’t wait to says, “When can we start?” “How about this Saturday at 3: 00?”she suggested.
When Saturday rolled around, Ollie and I were there to pick up Rascal at 3: 00 on time. “Rascal will be so happy to play in the park with you! “ Mrs Gonzales said. “If I’m still out grocery shopping when you return, just let yourselves i n with this spare key. I’ll be home a little while later.”
“Also, why do you think I named him Rascal? If there’s trouble, such as puddles, this guy is guaranteed to find it. And also the commands that you should .....” When we realized that Mrs Gonzales had lots of “alsos”, we interrupted her and ran away in the blink of an eye.
Not long after we arrived at the park, Rascal found a giant puddle and jumped into it and rolled around until every square inch of his furry body was dripping with mud. “Ugh! sil ly puppy, you’re the muddiest dog in the universes!” I said. Ollie said we should take him back home so he can get washed up.
But when we got to Mrs. Gonzales’s house, she didn’t answer the doorbell. “ She must still be out grocery shopping, “ I said. “ How about we use the garden tube to clean him? “ Ollie suggested. “ Good idea!” I said, putting Mrs. Gonzales’s key into the lock.”I’ll go inside and get a towel to dry him off.”
Paragraph 1:
But the second I opened the door, Rascal raced inside the house.

This was it.
Today was the day.
Finally, she would be able to see her again.
It’d been five long years. Her university days now felt like a lifetime ago. When Jenni fer thought back to it, she didn’t like the girl she had been then, but when she thought about Y ui Fay, that discomfort disappeared and her whole life lit up.
She couldn’t be more excited. She kept imagining their meeting – how they would run towards each other, hugging and talking of the old times. As she imagined, happiness spread through her body.
It was time to get dressed. As she was struggling about what to wear, she spotted a red summer dress, which she wore that night in Barcelona. She would never forget that night five years before. After a hard week at university, Y ui Fay and she spontaneously
(心血来潮地) bought bus tickets to Barcelona. They slept on the bus and then spent the whole day exploring the city. In the evening, they met these fun young guys and spent the whole night singing and dancing. Every day with Y ui Fay was fun.
After university Y ui Fay went back to China where she took over her family’s business, while Jennifer took the job in an office. They promised to keep in contact. But then life happened. The occasional calls faded with time and they had not talked for over two years. Y et, of all her friends, Y ui Fay was still the one she felt the closest to. She knew all her fears, dreams, and her wildest stories. She knew that if something happened, Y ui Fay would be there for her no matter what. And vice versa. Some friendships just survive the passage of time.
Y et the idea of meeting her was al so terrifying. What if…? The idea was too hard to put into
words. What if the person she was so fond of was no longer? What if this dinner turned out to be nothing more than a meeting between two boring businesswomen?
At that moment, her cellphone rang.

The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention. He was hiking the remote expanse of land behind his ranch(大牧场) in Patagonia, Arizona, a town near the U.S.-Mexico border, and covered the grass was a balloon—or at least the remains of one. Heiss walked toward it with his dog, Feliz, thinking he should pick up the latex (乳胶) pieces and throw them away.
That’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper.备战高考
“Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. A hand-drawn bow accompanied the word.
Heiss turned the paper over quickly. It was a numbered list, all in Spanish. “My Spanish isn’t
