My Favorite Holiday - Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year is my favorite holiday! It is the most important celebration in Chinese culture. Every year, it falls on a different date between January 21st and February 20th. The date changes based on the lunar calendar.
Weeks before the big day, my family starts getting ready. We clean our whole house from top to bottom! We want to sweep away any bad luck from the old year. Mama buys lots of delicious foods and fresh fruits. She bakes special New Year cookies too.
Dad puts up red decorations everywhere. Red is a lucky color in China. We hang up red lanterns and put up window decorations with words like "Happiness" and "Wealth." Dad also buys fresh flowers like pretty red blossoms.
A few days before New Year's Eve, the kids get hung a hung bao, which is a red envelope with money inside! The red color symbolizes good luck. Hung baos always have crisp new bills, never coins. I look forward to my hung bao all year!
On New Year's Eve, we gather for a huge feast with all our family - aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins. The table is filled with my favorite dishes like dumplings, noodles, fish, and spring rolls. For dessert, we have sweet rice balls and candied lotus seeds. Yum!
After dinner, the kids are allowed to stay up very late. We watch a big TV show that lasts for hours. At midnight, we open all the windows and doors. We set off firecrackers and fireworks outside to scare away evil spirits! The louder the better.
Dad gives each child a crisp new 1 bill at midnight for good luck. We kids love waving the bills around in the wind as we pop firecrackers. The night air smells like gunpowder mixed with the fireworks smoke.
The next day is the first day of the new year! Children dress up in their nicest outfits, usually with some red clothing. We wake up early to honor our ancestors. We burn incense and leave offerings of fruit at the family altar.
Then it is time for the luckiest ritual of all - giving and getting red envelopes! Children bow and say phrases like "Gong Xi Fa Cai" which means "Wishing you prosperity in the new year." The grown-ups give us hung baos filled with cash.
We are not allowed to open the hung baos inside houses or temples. So as soon as we get one, we dash outside to rip them open! I squeal with delight counting my dollar bills. My cousins and I love comparing who got the most money.
关于春节的短诗歌    The rest of the first day, we visit neighbors and relatives. We bring plates of candies, seeds, and fruits to share. People serve us tender coconut slices and delicious butter cookies shaped like goldfish for luck.
At night, we kids are allowed to stay up late watching movies and eating sunflower seeds.
Mama makes us hot sweet soup with tangy dried fruits like prunes, longans, and lotus seeds. So yummy!
My favorite part of Chinese New Year is seeing the amazing lantern festivals! We go to parks filled with huge lantern displays in all shapes and sizes. Some lanterns are as big as houses! I especially love the lanterns shaped like my favorite animals and characters.
There are also lantern riddle contests. People write clever rhymes on the lanterns, and you have to figure out the meanings. If you get a riddle right, they give you a prize like candy or toys! Isn't that fun?
At the end, everybody gets a lantern on a stick. We light the lanterns and parade them around, dancing with the bright lights bobbing above us. Some people's lanterns even launch up like hot air balloons and float into the night sky!
Chinese New Year celebrations last for 15 fun-filled days. It is a wonderful time for family, feasting, and good fortune. I look forward to it every year! What is your favorite holiday?

    The Magical Spring Festival
Yay, the Spring Festival is coming! This is my favorite time of the year. The Spring Festival is the Chinese New Year, and it's a really big celebration in my family and all around China.
A few weeks before the festival, my mom starts cleaning our whole house from top to bottom. She says we have to sweep away the old and make room for the new luck to come in the new year. I help her clean too, even though it's not my favorite chore. But I know it's important.
My dad goes to the market to buy lots of delicious foods for our New Year's Eve dinner. There are lucky foods like dumplings, noodles, spring rolls, and oranges. I love eating dumplings because they are so yummy! The dumplings are shaped like gold ingots which symbolize wealth. The noodles are super long to represent a long life. Cool, right?
