摘要
《护生画集》是弘一法师和丰子恺师生二人以及叶恭绰、朱幼兰、虞愚等艺文届名人共同合作，“以画说法”的漫画及书法作品。马一浮先生认为此画集是借画画的善巧方便寄其悲忧，并用慈悲的力量消除恶心，可谓缘起无碍以画说法者矣！《护生画集》所说的法即“护生”。其“护生”的宗趣强调的是“护心”，而“护心”是为了去除残忍心，长养慈悲心，然后拿此心来待人处世，并劝人护生戒杀及倡导素食。这是弘一法师和丰子恺师徒创作护生画的主要目的。
《护生画集》的创作历时了近半个世纪，历经丰子恺漫画创作的整个生涯。时间之长、作品之多、内容之丰富，可以说《护生画集》是一部伟大的作品。在这长达半个世纪的创作中，护生画已超出了本身的含义，护生画中所包含的艺术风格、艺术精神则与丰子恺的其他漫画相符合，在丰子恺的其他漫画作品中也同样蕴含了这种风格与精神。
《护生画集》在长达46年绘画创作中保持了艺术形式与绘画风格的一贯性。从主观上来说是受丰子恺天性的影响。他的平淡天真、超凡脱俗的性情，使其在绘画上注重笔墨趣味、笔意刚健，线条有平直厚实的木刻画意味。从客观上来说丰子恺的艺术风格也受当时印刷技术的影响。
《护生画集》雅俗共赏、画风率真自然、构图简洁、线条流畅，且漫画的内容层次丰富，具有深厚的人文关怀、浓厚的文学彩、中国传统思想和教化特。《护生画集》蕴涵最深刻的是中国传统的哲理和佛理，而以诗、文、书、画等外在形式呈现。图及诗文为其传播媒介，对成人和儿童均展现出不同的意涵与艺术境界，是亲子共读的艺术精品。
本文从文献的研究及整理中了解丰子恺的生平、学习历程、师承、漫画成就；并从《护生画集》的内容思想：包括题材与主题以及《护生画集》艺术特点等加以阐释，对《护生画集》做一个全面的了解与研究。
佛法是以慈悲为根本的。慈悲除了对自己，也发乎真情对周遭的人、事、物生出关怀和同情心。《护生画集》中所体现出的绘画风格、思想，以及对待自然生态观、儿童教育等观点中体现出的智慧，共同结合亦能发挥出护生戒杀、长养

慈悲心的功能，从而感动人心，使观者独善其身。本文即从这方面予以探讨，得“护生即护心”这一论点。
