Chinese Spring Festival is the most important festival in the Chinese calendar. As a "reunion" for Chinese people all over the world, traditional customs have been widened the festival atmosphere.
Chinese people all around the country have the same custom of decorating their homes to make them look better during the spring festival. People usually hang couplets to their doors and windows, expressing good wishes and blessedness. On the windowsill, plum blossom, peach blossom, neon light etc all can be seen to expel the coldness away. People also put some red papercuts on the window to decorate the home.
Windows and doors, beds and chairs, door gods which are gods that guard against evil, are all given a new look. In the traditional iconography, door gods were two muscular divine generals at the entrance, who are said to protect the house from supernatural danger.
In addition to decoration and house-cleaning, exchanging gifts is an important part of Chines
e spring festival. People usually give each other money in red envelopes with lucky money. Sweets and candies such as sesame seed candy, licorice candy and malt candy are often bought as a gift for the children.
Chinese Spring Festival also offers many traditional foods. Such as dumplings, noodles, jiaozi, tangyuan and rice cakes. People usually make pancakes in the night with eggs, onion, carrot and vegetable oil. Eating these traditional food enhance the festive atmosphere.
In a word, the traditional customs of Chinese Spring Festival have provided us a special warmth atmosphere. These traditions has enriched the people’s life and created a good atmosphere for the reunion of Chinese people all over the world.
