The Festival of Lanterns is Coming
The Festival of Lanterns is an important Chinese festival that falls on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. It’s also called the Yuanxiao Festival or the Shangyuan Festival.
This festival has a long history. According to legend, about 2000 years ago, there was an oppressive government in power and people were living in misery. One day, an old man named Taoist Zhong Kui offered help and led the people to fight against the tyranny. People defeated the oppressive government at last. Thus they celebrated with lanterns in joy and named this festival after the old man's disciples who gathered the people to fight, Yuan Xiao.
On this day, people go out to enjoy the bright lights of lanterns and have a happy time. During the festival, people like to eat tangyuan, which is made of glutinous rice flour, with different fillings. It symbolizes reunion and harmony.
This festival is full of joy and enthusiasm. People also like to do a variety of activities, such as playing puzzles, lighting firecrackers and watching dragon and lion dances. All these activities make the festival more lively and colorul.
