复合名词 构成形式
一. 概述
科技英语作为一门学科始于上世纪70年代，随着科技发展，科技英语由于体裁内容合适用方式的特殊性而形成了语言和词汇方面的特点，科技英语作为一种特殊的文体受到英语学习者的重视，对科技英语的研究也日渐加深.
众所周知， 阅读和翻译科技文献时，最让人头疼的是经常会碰到许多科技术语。科技术语是专业领域中的概念名词。随着新学科、新技术、新材料、新设备、新工艺的不断产生，科技新名词、新术语大量涌现。在科技英语的使用中，有很多促成简洁的方法，使用复合名词（compound nouns） 代替意义相同的表达形式，被视为最常见的一种。因此掌握一定的科技英语复合名词对于科技工作者有着重要的现实意义。
科技英语中的复合名词结构 ，比之其它形式具有简洁，凝练之优点。例如 a turbine driven by a flow of gas（燃气涡轮）， the noise caused by the engines（发动机噪声）. 这
些由5个或更多的词构成的词语，在科技英语中则常表述为gas turbine， engine noise. 两者相比，后者不仅远比前者简短和凝练，而且在表述上更清晰，因此在科技英语中大量出现复合名词，以便使语言简洁明快。
二. 科技英语中的复合名词有以下几种构成形式：

从以上的结构分析可以看出科技英语复合名词通过大量使用抽象名词来追求所描述事物的简练，客观和浓缩，深究其原因，主要有以下两点：
首先，科技英语文献是以事实为基础来记叙客观事物的，作者在遣词造句中要求见物，而名词正是表物的词汇，故在普通英语中用动词表示的内容，科技英语却习惯用名词来表达.
其次， 科技英语用词简洁，表达准确，结构严密，描述客观，名词表达短语或短语表达句子可以把更多的信息融于一体，言简意赅，组织严密.
然而，在科技英语文章中也存在着过量使用复合名词的趋势，例如X-ray diffracton crystal structure analysis， the new institute administration office facilities等，这些超长结构不仅冗长笨重，而且意思模糊，在使用中应该尽量避免。
