一、相同之处
1．whether和if表示“是否”时，都能引导宾语从句，这时两者可以互换，常置于see，ask，learn，tell，wonder，doubt，find out等动词之后。如：
He asked me whether/if I could help him. 他问我是否我能帮他。
I want to know whether/if he lives there. 我想知道他是否住在那里。
We don’t know whether/if we should go or stay. 我们不知道我们是否该走还是待着。
2．在be uncertain/doubtful之后，常用whether引导宾语从句，有时也可以用if。如：
We are uncertain whether/if Mary will come. 我们不确定玛丽是否会来。
二、不同之处
1．whether可置于句首引导主语从句，而if不能；但如果是it作形式主语，则主语从句中可以用if。如：
Whether he will come is not certain. =It is not certain if/whether he will come.
他是否会来是不确定的。（it作形式主语，则后面的从句中可以用if）
2．在宾语从句中，如果从句中有or not时，分两种情况：
(1)当whether与or not连成一个词组时，whether不可换用if。
She asked me whether or not I could finish the task in a day. 她问我是否能在一天之内完成这项任务。
I don’t know whether or not they will come for our help. 我不知道他们是否会来帮我们。
(2)若whether和or not不连在一起，在口语中可以用if取代whether是什么意思whether。
I don’t care if/whether your car breaks down or not.我不在乎你的车是否会出故障。
3．whether可用在介词之后，引导宾语从句，而if则不能。如：
Success depends on whether we make enough effort.
成功取决于我们是否做了足够的努力。（on是介词，后面只能用whether）
Scientists look at whether climate change is causing bigger ocean waves.
科学家们观察气候变化是否正引起更大的海浪。（at是介词，后面只能用whether）
The question is whether the voters will elect her. 问题是选民是否会选她。
The point is whether he will accept it or not. 关键是他是否会接受。
5．在名词之后引导同位语从句时，用whether而不用if。如：
The question whether the students answered correctly should be decided by the teacher.
学生是否回答正确的问题应该由老师决定。
There remains the question whether he will be elected in the election. 他是否会在选举中当选仍然是个问题。（该句是倒装句，将状语放在句首了，主语是the question，whether he will be elected in the election是主语the question的同位语从句）
6．whether后可接不定式，而if不能。如：
She can’t decide whether to marry him. 她决定不了是否和他结婚。
She can’t decide whether to tell him the truth. 她决定不了是否告诉他真相。
7．在有些动词（如discuss）之后，只能用whether，而不用if引导宾语从句。如：
We discussed whether we should close the shop. 我们讨论了是否应该把店关掉。
8．可能造成歧义时，用whether而不用if。
Pease let me know whether you are coming.
请告诉我你是否要来。（whether引导宾语从句）
Pease let me know if you are coming.
如果你要来，请告诉我。（if引导状语从句）

【解析】该句可用排除法。If表示“如果”引导状语从句，但这里很显然不是，表示“是否”不用于句首，排除A项；Unless“除非”；What“……的（事）”；Whether“是否”。代入句子，排除B、C项；故选D项。句意：是否应该停止吸烟是你不得不做出的最重大的决定。

【解析】根据句中有or not，排除C、D项；空格处要引导的是表语从句，而if不能引导表语从句，故只能选B项。
