The Origin of the Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, which usually falls in June. It is one of the most traditional and important festivals in China.
Legend has it that the festival originated in the Warring States period (475-221 BC) in China. It was a time of political turmoil and many battles for territorial control. At that time, there was a poet and statesman named Qu Yuan who served in the court of the Chu Kingdom.
Qu Yuan was a loyal and patriotic person who wanted to see his country flourish and his king succeed, but he was opposed by factions at court who saw him as a threat to their power. He was eventually banished, and as a result, he spent the rest of his life writing poetry and wandering from place to place. He wrote many poems, including the famous "Lisao," which expresses his patriotic feelings.
端午的来历 In 278 BC, news reached Qu Yuan that the Chu capital had been taken over by the enemy state of Qin. Heartbroken and disillusioned, he threw himself into the Miluo River, and when the people of Chu heard of his suicide, they rushed to the river to try to rescue him. To their dismay, they found that Qu Yuan had already drowned. In order to prevent his body from being eaten by fish and other wildlife, the people threw rice into the river as a form of tribute to him.
Later on, people started to wrap the rice in bamboo leaves and tie it with strings, creating what we now know as zongzi, a traditional snack that is eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival. They also started to paddle out in boats to search for Qu Yuan's body, and this practice eventually evolved into the dragon boat races that are still held today.
In conclusion, the Dragon Boat Festival is a time for Chinese people to honor their traditions and celebrate their heritage. It is a time to come together with family and friends to enjoy delicious food and participate in fun activities. At its core, the festival is a tribute to Qu Yuan and his unwavering devotion to his country, and it serves as a reminder of the enduring power of loyalty, friendship, and love.
